Jai Hind College has a rich history, rooted in the efforts of educators after the partition of India to support the educational needs of displaced communities. Jai Hind College, Autonomous, Mumbai, was founded in 1948, by a group of erstwhile professors of D.J. Sind College, Karachi, and other eminent educationists under the registered name of ‘Sind Educationists’ Association’ primarily for the educational rehabilitation of the Sindhi community.

Jai Hind College has been granted the Autonomous status from the Academic year 2018-19 onwards. The University of Mumbai will confer the graduation and post-graduation degree which will now also bear the name of Jai Hind college

Jai Hind College started as an arts and sciences college. Many new courses and subjects were introduced after its founding — the faculty of commerce was introduced in 1980, management and computer science were introduced in 1999, mass media and biotechnology in 2002, and banking and insurance in 2003.

The Faculty of Arts is as old as the college. It is an all-encompassing realm for the various subjects which fall under the Arts stream. The faculty through its various departments aims at broadening the horizon for students who wish to specialize in the various subjects offered by the college.
